In December 2023, I attended the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Dubai, UAE with a group of social scientists from the American Anthropological Association (AAA). Unsurprisingly, my perspectives on this experience are complex and not easily captured in a single description.
I've detailed some of my experiences in these blog posts:
"On Observing: Reflections on UN Climate Policy Negotiations from Paris to the Present" Platypus: The CASTAC Blog. Committee for the Anthropology of Science, Technology & Computing. (May 2024) https://blog.castac.org/2024/05/on-observing-reflections-on-un-climate-policy-negotiations-from-paris-to-the-present/.
"'Nature-based Solutions' to the Climate Conundrum: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" Engagement Blog. Anthropology & Environment Society. (May 2024) https://aesengagement.wordpress.com/2024/05/07/nature-based-solutions-to-the-climate-conundrum-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/
The second is part of a series of evocative submissions by my colleagues at the AAA called "Ethnographic Insights into Climate Worlds" which you can access in full here:
If you'd like to read about the most recent 2024 meeting of the UNFCCC (COP28) in Baku, Azerbaijan, I recommend this informative series by my colleague, UGA law professor, Adam Orford:
