CLIMATE POLICY ANALYSIS & ADVOCACY

In 2014 and 2015, I joined a team of staff and volunteers from the Sierra Club to conduct media outreach, policy analysis, and advocacy work at the annual meetings of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Lima, Peru, and Paris, France (COP 20 and 21). I then returned with a group of social scientists from the American Anthropological Association to COP 28 in Dubai in 2023 and the Bonn intersessional in 2024.

At these meetings I have been able to observe the process of international environmental policy in the making, including the ways that nations and civil society members form coalitions to push forward key pieces of legislation, and how the latest developments in climate research get incorporated into policy instruments to try to address the immense challenge of anthropogenic climate change. My current interests primarily revolve around issues of implementation, especially related to: Loss and Damage, land use and land use change (LULUCF), and water infrastructure.

For more information on international climate policy, I recommend the work of Climate Action Tracker, and CAN's daily briefings of the UNFCCC meetings called "Eco."
